Working as a freelancer gives me greater freedom of expression and control over every decision I make. My day-to-day life today is completely different from what it used to be, not least because I choose to work part-time whenever possible.

What has changed since I became independent - Loriane Mykita

Are you self-employed? Do you want to take the plunge or are you unsure about your decision? Here's what Loriane Mykitaa freelance strategy and management consultant for over 2 years. She tells us what's changed in her life since she took the plunge.

What has changed since I became independent:

  • The freedom
  • : Working as a freelancer gives me greater freedom to express myself, and control over every decision I make. My day-to-day life today is completely different from what it used to be, not least because I choose to work part-time whenever possible. This lifestyle gives me a certain balance between professional and personal life. It allows me to look after my two children, pick them up from school on certain days, and still have time to continue the voluntary work I do elsewhere.
  • Autonomy:
  • I'm relatively in control of my schedule. I have to meet the deadlines set by the customers, but if they're open and the trust is there, I can organize my weeks as I see fit. That's the biggest change for me since becoming an independent consultant.
  • Money:
  • At the moment, I'm on assignment two days a week for several months. I was asked to do this and I accepted. It's up to each individual to decide what he or she prefers (the assignment, the duration, maximizing income). I believe in balance, and I live very well with it.
  • Gratuity :
  • Being independent gives me a certain personal satisfaction. You're chosen for yourself, for your skills and personality, not for a brand. I bring my brick to projects that make sense to me, and above all to people I enjoy working with. I really feel useful and in control of my career.

On the other hand, being an independent consultant comes at a price!

Autonomy doesn't worry me much, I always tell myself that I'll find a mission. I've been sharing my life with a freelancer (music and cinema) for 15 years. In my personal life, I've always been surrounded by people who aren't used to being on permanent contracts. However, for the vast majority of freelance consultants, not knowing about future assignments can be a source of stress.

A word of advice: instead of seeing it as a hindrance, try to see these slack periods as an opportunity, a time to devote yourself to new things, take a vacation, be with your family, or an opportunity to reach out to other sectors of activity, other customers!

Freedom comes at a price. Income can be uncertain. Multiplying collaborations and chaining assignments together to earn more money is possible. It's also possible to opt for part-time work or leave time between assignments. Independence gives you that freedom.

A word of advice: it's all a question of choice, so take the time to weigh up the pros and cons.

My choice, my freedom.

For over two years now, I've been dividing my week between my missions, my volunteer activities and, of course, my family. I've never had such a varied schedule, and above all, it changes from week to week.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to be confined to a single field, I like the idea of not fitting into a particular box, of being "different". As an independent consultant, I'm constantly evolving, discovering new people and embracing new horizons. I like to think that I don't know what my day-to-day life or job will be like in one or two years' time.

When you're a freelance consultant, the field of possibilities is wide! Everything is relative, adaptable to your needs and desires. Take the time to make your decisions, to choose your mission. What's more, you don't have to change everything: you can work with customers or in fields you know.

Quote:

"Being an independent consultant is much more than just a job, it's a way of seeing life differently, of approaching one's daily life and career with a certain open-mindedness" - Loriane Mykita.
